CARLOS PÉREZ SIQUIER

(Almeria 1930-2021)

CHANCA IN COLOUR (1962-1968)

Carlos Pérez Siquier was one of the foremost photographers in the transformation of Spanish photography in the 1950s. He was the founder of Afal, the Almeria Photography Group, considered the most important movement to rejuvenate Spanish photography which attracted the most innovative photographers of the era, including Miserachs, Maspons, Masats, Pomés, Terré and more.

His work forms part of important collections, and a large number of exhibitions and publications bear witness to the career of this artist who received the Spanish National Photography Award in 2003.

Pérez Siquier is also considered a pioneer in the use of colour, a technique that he started to explore precisely in “Chanca in colour (1962-1968)”. In this collection, the photographer shows another dimension of the marginal Chanca neighbourhood in the city of Almería that he had previously photographed in black and white. By using colour and unique framing, the central importance of the images falls not so much on the people but rather on the surfaces and textures in a way that makes the work more abstract than documentary in nature.

This exhibition graciously comes from the MAPFRE Foundation Collections.
