Jacques Léonard

(París, 1909 – L’Escala, 1994)

SHORT READS

Not long ago, Jacques Léonard was still an unknown photographer, although his collection, currently featured in the Historical Archive of L’Escala and represented by the Photographic Social Vision Foundation, contains a vast number of negatives and copies from the 1950s and 60s that reveal a vibrant and professionally fascinating figure.

Best known for his excellent depictions of Barcelona’s gypsy community, which he was able to create thanks to his marriage to Rosario Amaya, Léonard crafted an archive that tackles diverse topics thanks to his work as a freelance photographer for a variety of media outlets as well as in his own studio, which focused on photos for the advertising industry.

This remarkable collection of photographs captures the daily experiences of children and their lives on the street with a perspective that brings him closer to the documentary and humanistic photography of his peers. Aptly on display at a local bookstore, this small exhibition showcases a selection of photos of children playing and reading.
