THE DESIRE FOR FREEDOM

Lee Miller was one of the quintessential female photographers of the 20th century. A fashion photographer and model, surrealist photographer, war correspondent and photojournalist, throughout her life Miller constantly struggled to seek out and exercise freedom, a valiant effort that made her into a vibrant and professionally fascinating figure.

She posed for leading photographers, lived and learned alongside representatives from the most avant-garde European intellectual and artistic currents (Man Ray, André Breton, Jean Cocteau, Paul Éluard, Dalí, Picasso, and more). Miller also became one of the first female war photographers and correspondents, documenting the Nazi blitz over London, the Normandy landings and the liberation of the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps, among many other wartime events.

Pioneering, precocious and creative, with a vast skillset of technical and artistic knowledge, Miller imprinted her own highly expressive personal trademark and original composition on her entire body of work.

This exhibition seeks to lead us on a journey through images of each subject that Miller tackled: fashion, surrealism, portraits and war, with special emphasis on the latter due to the importance of bearing witness and documenting history. The images also showcase how women in general and those who participated in the struggle for freedom in particular featured prominently in Miller’s oeuvre.
