MY MEDITERRANEAN. TONI CATANY – JOSEP PLA

Toni Catany was a unique photographer who defied classification. Self-trained, his work has been displayed in multiple exhibitions and can be found in several collections in Spain and abroad. He received numerous awards, including the Catalan National Culture Award of the Government of Catalonia in Plastic Arts, the Spanish National Photography Award and the Ramon Llull Award of Arts, while also being named a Chevalier de la Orden des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. He also published several books that won awards from photography festivals, publishers and institutions.

Experimenting with several techniques, Toni Catany crafted a profoundly timeless, sensual, sensitive and subtle beauty in his body of work that included portraits, nudes, landscapes and still lifes.

He presented the exhibition “My Mediterranean” 33 years ago at Casal Solleric, in Palma de Mallorca –and later also in Houston’s FotoFest–, based on a compilation of images made during his trips to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, the Maghreb and also Mallorca. These were the settings that the artist most identified with personally and which he returned to time and time again. We are showcasing a selection of images from that exhibition along with other unpublished images, this time accompanied by texts by Josep Pla also written based on his journeys across the Mediterranean. The images and words provide two visions of a complex geographical and cultural space that fascinated photographer and author alike.
