A businessman by trade and a self-taught amateur<\/em> photographer, the first time that Gabriel Cuallad\u00f3 (Massanassa, 1925 – Madrid, 2003) acquired a camera was in 1951 to celebrate the birth of his first born son. This initial gesture led to a practice that he continued throughout his life. <\/p>

In 1956, he entered the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid. A year later, he joined the AFAL (Almer\u00eda Photographic Association), while in 1959 he founded the collective La Palanga, actively participating through these two entities in revitalising Spanish photography in the 1950s. <\/p>

Starting in 1959, his images received awards and international recognition in individual and collective exhibitions in Amsterdam, Paris, London, Moscow and the Rencontres Internationales de Photographie de Arles, among others, as well as in numerous publications such as the North American magazine Popular Photography<\/em> and the English Photography Yearbook<\/em>. The 1980s finally brought him the recognition from the mass public with impressive exhibitions, including the anthology organised by the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) in 1989. <\/p>

In 1994, he received the inaugural National Photography Award given by the Ministry of Culture as well as the Gold Medal from the Circle of Fine Arts of Madrid in 1998. Upon his death, he left a notable photographic legacy, a valuable collection of photographs and one of the best photo libraries in all of Spain. <\/p>

As part of the revitalisation of Spanish photography in the mid-20th century, Cuallad\u00f3 contributed an approachable, sincere and delicate perspective, freed from conventions and any sponsor, which revealed his capacity to convey the sentiments and emotions that his surroundings stirred in him. Family, friends and life\u2019s everyday moments were the spotlight featured in his minimal scenes that were both magnetic and timeless. <\/p>

Taken mostly between Madrid, Asturias and the Valencian Community and forming a series that operates as open-ended sequences more than isolated images, his large scale, compassionate and technically precise photos are characterised by off-centred or fragmentary frames that pay special attention to the shadows. Cuallad\u00f3 thus managed to preserve a certain shroud of mystery particularly present in the subjects of his portraits, whom he approached openly with trusting and natural care.<\/p>

This selection of portraits and a few street scenes reflect Cuallad\u00f3\u2019s modern outlook as well as the delicate poetry imbued in his photos. Together they form this exhibition that seeks to show a small but representative part of his work.<\/p>

The photo prints in this exhibition come from the family archive and are all from his era. These are unique works developed by the artist himself. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
